Paint and Flooring Quantity Calculator

Updated: 3 August 2026

Buying paint or flooring usually stalls at the same point: not knowing the square meters. Enter the dimensions and see the paintable surface, the liters of paint required and the flooring quantity including waste allowance.

Short answer
Paintable area: (room perimeter × ceiling height) minus doors and windows.
Paint volume: area × number of coats ÷ coverage (usually 10 to 13 sqm per liter).
Flooring: area × waste factor (about 7 percent for laminate, 10 percent for tile).

This page gives quantities, not prices. You get current unit prices from wherever you buy.

How is paint quantity calculated?

It takes four steps. First you find the whole wall surface, then you subtract what will not be painted.

1

Find the perimeter: (width + length) × 2. In a 4 by 5 meter room the perimeter is 18 meters.

2

Multiply by ceiling height: 18 × 2.7 = 48.6 square meters of gross wall.

3

Subtract doors and windows. A standard door is about 1.9 sqm and a window about 2.1 sqm.

4

Multiply the remaining area by the number of coats and divide by coverage. The result is what you need in liters.

Wall covered by built-in units that stay in place is not painted, so you can subtract it. If they are removed, the wall behind gets painted and the area grows.

What is coverage and why give a range?

Coverage is how many square meters one liter covers in a single coat. For interior wall paints it is usually between 10 and 13 square meters, and every product states its own value on the tin.

Absorbent surfaces (fresh plaster, first painting) drink more paint. Going from a dark color to a light one may need a third coat, so raise the coat count.

We do not quote a single number because it genuinely varies by product. Once you see the value on the tin you are buying, narrow the estimate accordingly.

How much waste allowance should you add?

Cutting, breakage and pattern direction make part of the material unusable. If you skip this allowance the material runs out mid-job and matching the same batch gets hard.

MaterialTypical wasteWhy
Paint5 percentMixing residue, paint left in roller and brush
Laminate flooring7 percentCutting and pattern direction
Tile10 percentCutting, breakage, joint layout

Keep the allowance higher for diagonal laying, large pattern repeats or rooms with many corners. Buying an extra box from the same batch is easier than matching color later.

Getting the measurement right

The accuracy of the quantity depends entirely on the accuracy of the measurement. If the room is not rectangular, split it into parts, calculate each separately and add them up.

Measure ceiling height at two different corners: in older buildings the floor may slope. If there is skirting or cornice, shorten the height to be painted accordingly.

If you would rather not measure by hand, our app scans the room with your phone and derives the wall, door and window dimensions itself.

Why are there no prices here?

Paint and flooring prices change with brand, product class, city and how the tradesperson works. A number we write today would be wrong in a few months, and a wrong number is worse than no number.

Our job is to give you the right quantity. With square meters and liters in hand, asking for a price gets easier: you ask a precise question and compare quotes on the same basis.

Frequently asked questions

How many square meters does one liter of paint cover?

For interior wall paints it is usually 10 to 13 square meters in a single coat. Absorbent surfaces lower this, and the value printed on the tin is what counts.

How many coats are needed?

Two coats are usually enough. Going from a dark color to a light one, or painting a wall for the first time, may need three.

Is the ceiling included?

If you are painting the ceiling too, a surface equal to the floor area is added. Tick the ceiling box in the calculator to include it.

What if the room is not rectangular?

Split the room into rectangles, calculate each area separately and add them up. For recessed walls, measure the perimeter piece by piece as well.

I do not know my door and window sizes, what happens?

The calculator uses standard sizes: about 1.9 sqm per door and 2.1 sqm per window. If yours differ a lot, adjust the area manually.

Is this calculation exact?

No, it is approximate. The point is to walk into the shop with a number of the right size. For critical work, the tradesperson's on-site measurement is what counts.

I am a tenant, is repainting on me?

That depends on your contract and the nature of the wear. Ordinary wear and tear is treated differently from damage; in a dispute the contract text and the handover record are decisive.

How does the app derive measurements?

On supported iPhone models it scans the room, derives wall, door and window dimensions and calculates the paintable area automatically. The result is approximate and is not a certified measurement.

Skip the tape measure, scan your home

Scan the room with your phone and let the wall, door and window dimensions come out by themselves. See the paintable area and flooring quantity room by room. You do not need to post a listing.
